14 Mile AT Hike Roan Highlands

with one comment

IMG_5415

My brother Jon and I hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail on May 1 – 2.

We made the 14 mile trek and then some in spite of my slow uphill speed.

The Roan Highlands & Balds took my breath away in more ways than one.

The weather changed with the altitude but over all it was overcast, with a scattered showers.

We passed a few hikers that complained of the cloudy view but I really enjoyed walking through the mist.

Occasionally the clouds would part long enough for us to enjoy the view.

Near Overmountain Shelter

(We found two water sources at this location both natural springs. We used water from both locations straight from the ground, no filtering or treatment.

The water was clear, sweet and refreshing. )

(This trail was an added uphill stretch the next morning with yellow mountain and the humps to follow. Next time I’ll hike on up toward yellow mountain and camp at one of the awesome tent sites I saw there.)

Local Firefighters Control Downtown Blaze

leave a comment »

A fire raged through empty historic bulidings in downtown just a few blocks away from where I live. Fire trucks screamed past my house several times and a good portion of downtown roadways were closed the next morning.

After I took Erica to school I stopped by to photograph the scene.
